Assam Rifles Busts Drug Network in Manipur, Seizes Meth Worth ₹40 Crore

Imphal: In a joint operation, the Assam Rifles and Manipur Police have seized 160,000 methamphetamine (Yaba) tablets, worth over 40 crore rupees, in Jiribam district.

Acting on specific intelligence, a truck carrying these tablets was intercepted on Thursday. A drug peddler was arrested on the spot and handed over to the police along with the truck.

Success in other operations, heroin and weapons recovered

In another raid, police arrested a smuggler named Mohammad Mustakim with 310 grams of heroin (packed in 24 soap cases) in Imphal East.

In addition, security forces arrested Salam Shyam Singh (44), an active cadre of the banned organization KYKL, from a rented house in Imphal West. His associate, Salam Naubi Singh (43), was apprehended in Kakching.

111 rounds of various calibers of ammunition, a 36 HE grenade (without detonators), two detonators, a mobile phone, and an Aadhaar card were recovered from them.

Fear of Smuggling from Myanmar

According to officials, these Yaba tablets, also known as “crazy drug”, are completely banned in India and are likely to be smuggled from Myanmar.

Five districts of Manipur—Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Kamjong, and Ukhrul—share a 398-km open international border with Myanmar, making it challenging to curb drug and other smuggling.

Security agencies have stated that such operations will continue to protect the state from the clutches of drug abuse.
