Atishi Sikh Gurus Remarks Row: Delhi Assembly Seeks Response From Punjab DGP, Jalandhar CP

The Delhi Legislative Assembly has reprimanded senior Punjab officials, including Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur, and the Additional Secretary of the Punjab Home Department, for failing to respond to a notice in a privilege matter linked to alleged remarks by former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi.

Assembly Secretary Ranjit Singh stated in a February 13 letter that no reply was received by the February 12 deadline. Officials have now been given time until February 20, 2026, failing which contempt proceedings may be initiated.

Privilege Matter Should Not Be Treated as Routine Communication

The letter, issued under the direction of Assembly Chairman Pradyuman Singh Rajput, emphasized that privilege matters are serious and require personal responses from the officials concerned. It warned that any delay or refusal to provide information would itself amount to breach of privilege and contempt.

What Triggered the Controversy?

The controversy began on January 6, 2026, during the winter session of the Delhi Assembly. While discussing the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, BJP members alleged that Atishi made objectionable remarks linking “respect dogs, respect Gurus” during a heated debate on pollution.

The BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal claimed the remarks insulted Sikh Gurus and released a video clip from the Assembly proceedings.

Atishi and AAP Call Video ‘Doctored’

Atishi and the Aam Aadmi Party denied the allegations, stating that the viral video circulating on social media was manipulated. Atishi clarified that she was speaking about stray dogs and accused the BJP of twisting her statement to hurt Sikh sentiments.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also defended her, alleging that the BJP has historically been “anti-Punjab and anti-Sikh” and was distorting her remarks for political gain.

FIRs and Forensic Examination in Punjab

Following a complaint by Jalandhar AAP leader Iqbal Singh Baggi, Jalandhar Police registered a case and sent the viral video to the Mohali Forensic Lab. The lab reportedly indicated signs of tampering.

Subsequently, BJP leader Kapil Mishra and BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa were named in the FIR for allegedly sharing the video. Earlier, Congress leaders Pargat Singh and Sukhpal Khaira were also accused of circulating the clip.

BJP and Akali Dal Stand by Their Allegations

The BJP and Akali Dal maintain that the video reflects Atishi’s actual words and amounts to an insult to Sikh Gurus. They have demanded accountability and strict action.

Meanwhile, the Privileges Committee of the Delhi Assembly is seeking clarification from Punjab Police officials regarding the FIR and investigation process, intensifying the political confrontation between Delhi and Punjab authorities.

The matter remains under investigation, with both sides firmly standing by their respective claims.
