Ayodhya Women Craft Eco-Friendly Hats and Gamchas From Banana Fibre to Beat Heatwave

Ayodhya: Amid rising heatwave conditions, women in Ayodhya are being trained to prepare eco-friendly hats, gamchas and other handcrafted items using banana fiber as part of a livelihood and skill development program aimed at promoting self-reliance and sustainable income generation.

Officials associated with such training programs said the initiative focuses on utilising banana plant waste especially stems that are normally discarded after harvest, to extract natural fiber for making various utility and decorative products.

Banana Waste Converted Into Value-Added Products

The banana stems are processed using machines to extract fibre, which is then cleaned, dried and woven into products such as hats, mats, purses, bags, yoga mats and temple-related items. Similar banana fiber-based training initiatives have been implemented in multiple parts of India under agricultural and rural development programs.

The objective is to convert agricultural waste into income-generating resources while promoting environmentally sustainable handicrafts.

Women Empowerment Through Skill Training

Participants in such programs are trained in fiber extraction and weaving techniques, enabling rural women to develop small-scale production units. These initiatives aim to support financial independence, especially among women from rural and semi-urban backgrounds.

Experts note that banana fiber-based crafts have already emerged as a viable livelihood model in several Indian states, helping women earn a steady income through local and export markets.

Eco-Friendly Crafts With Market Potential

Women trained under the program also produce slippers, jewellery, decorative items, mats, pen holders, and other handmade goods from banana fibre, contributing both to environmental sustainability and rural entrepreneurship.

Such initiatives are part of a broader trend in India where agricultural waste is increasingly being converted into eco-friendly commercial products.
