Baby Monkey’s Favorite Toy Turns Into High-Priced Collectible

An innocent little monkey… a soft orange toy… and a story that won hearts around the world. This emotional bond, which began in a Japanese zoo, has now become an international shopping sensation. Videos and photos that went viral on social media not only moved people, but also transformed a simple plush toy into a popular collectible.

Separated from mother, found solace in a toy

A seven-month-old macaque monkey named Punch, living at Japan’s Ichikawa City Zoo, is currently making waves online. According to reports, Punch was abandoned by his mother and other monkeys in the enclosure. To comfort the little monkey, who was struggling with loneliness and stress, zoo staff gave him a stuffed orangutan plush toy.

The scenes that followed brought tears to the eyes of many. Punch is seen hugging the toy tightly, sleeping with it, and carrying it around with him all day. In many photos, he is seen clinging to the toy like a child clinging to its mother.

Punch’s emotional attachment quickly went viral on social media. Millions of people shared these photos and videos, leaving emotional reactions in the comments section.

Simple toy becomes a worldwide hit

The toy that supported Punch is IKEA’s ‘Djungelskog’ orangutan stuffed toy. Its original price is around $20 (approximately ₹1,817). But after Punch’s story came to light, demand for the toy skyrocketed.

According to a New York Post report, the toy quickly went out of stock in many countries, including the United States, Japan, and South Korea. People wanted to buy not just a toy, but a part of the emotional story.

IKEA Japan’s President and Chief Sustainability Officer, Petra Fair, personally visited the Ichikawa City Zoo and donated several plush toys for Punch, ensuring he always has his furry companion nearby.

    Online Resale Sparks a Buzz

As demand surged, so did the online resale market. The toy sold for several times its original price on platforms like eBay.

In some cases, the price reached ₹32,000—nearly ten times its original value. A seller in Texas purchased 17 toys and began selling them for $51.99 (approximately ₹4,727), selling 12 of them in a single day.

In another shocking case, the toy was listed for $350 (approximately ₹31,803). This illustrates how emotional stories can influence market demand.

The craze continues on social media

The story of Punch and his orange plush toy continues to touch people’s hearts. Many users described it as “pure love,” an “emotional moment,” and a “heart-melting story.”

This story isn’t just about a monkey and a toy, but about the emotional bond that exists between humans and animals alike.

While the toy continues to be bought and sold around the world, Punch sleeps peacefully, hugging his favorite toy—unaware that he has inadvertently created a new sensation around the world.

This incident once again proves how quickly an innocent and true story can become a global movement in the digital age.
