History-Sheeter Shot in Leg During Police Encounter in UP’s Bahraich; Three Arrested

Bahraich: A history-sheeter was injured in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district on Monday. Police arrested three other accused during the operation while two suspects escaped after allegedly firing at the police team.

The encounter took place near the Nanpara-Khairi Ghat road under the Khairi Ghat police station area. A joint team of the Special Operations Group (SOG) and local police was carrying out a checking operation after receiving information about suspicious activity.

Police said the suspects were reportedly gathering on a road leading to Nanpara. They were suspected of planning a theft or trying to sell stolen goods.

Acting on the tip-off, SOG personnel and local police began checking vehicles in the area. When two cars approached, the team tried to stop them. A man travelling in the first car allegedly got out and opened fire at the police.

The police returned fire in self-defence. During the exchange, a history-sheeter identified as Sambhari was shot in the leg and fell at the spot. Police said more than three dozen serious criminal cases had been registered against him.

    Three Accused Arrested

After the exchange of fire, police cordoned off the area and arrested three men. They were identified as Mahesh Chauhan, Mohit Lal and Anil Vishwakarma.

However, two suspects travelling in the second car allegedly fired at the police team and fled. A search operation has been launched to trace them.

Police also recovered an illegal pistol, ammunition, a car, stolen jewellery and cash during the operation.

Police Investigate Possible Links to Other Cases

Bahraich Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Srivastava said the team had acted on information about suspicious activities in the area. He said one accused was injured after opening fire at the police and three others were arrested.

The SP added that efforts were underway to arrest the two absconding suspects. Legal proceedings have also been initiated.

Police are questioning the arrested men to determine whether they were involved in other theft cases and to identify any possible accomplices. The investigation is continuing.
