Balochistan Chaos Gives ISI Fresh Opportunity to Push Drugs Into India, Security Agencies Alert

New Delhi: Indian security agencies are keeping a close watch on possible changes in narcotics trafficking routes amid growing instability in Balochistan and Myanmar, officials said. Agencies have warned that disruptions in the region could provide opportunities for international drug networks to expand their operations and target Indian markets.

India has intensified its crackdown against narcotics smuggling, with security forces and law enforcement agencies working to curb illegal drug networks operating through land, sea and international routes.

Balochistan Emerges as a Concern for Drug Trafficking Networks

Officials said the reduction in poppy cultivation in Afghanistan after the Taliban’s ban on poppy farming in 2022 significantly impacted traditional narcotics supply chains in the region.

However, agencies believe that trafficking networks have been attempting to shift their operations to other areas, including parts of Balochistan, while also exploiting instability in neighbouring regions.

The deteriorating security situation in Balochistan, where clashes between Pakistani security forces and militant groups have increased, has made monitoring illegal activities more challenging, officials said.

Security Agencies Monitor Multiple Routes

According to officials, drug networks may attempt to use several routes to move narcotics towards India, including the maritime route, desert routes along the western border and international transit channels.

The coastal route remains a major challenge for Indian agencies, as smugglers have previously attempted to transport narcotics through high-speed boats towards the western coast.

Security agencies are also keeping strict surveillance along the Punjab border, where drones have been used by smugglers to deliver drugs.

Officials said advancements in drone technology and increased payload capacity have added new challenges for border security forces.

India Steps Up Anti-Drug Operations

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly emphasised the government’s goal of making India drug-free and directed agencies to strengthen action against narcotics networks.

Officials said the current period remains crucial in the fight against drug trafficking, with agencies focusing on disrupting supply chains, strengthening intelligence networks and improving coordination between security forces.

The situation in Myanmar is also being closely monitored, as instability in the region could further impact narcotics routes operating across South Asia.
