Bamboo Cultivation to Break the Crop Cycle

Punjab and Haryana are agricultural states in India. They follow the ageold Rabi and Kharif seasons, and the rice and wheat crop cycle. Agricultural experts say that in Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, farmers in all these states practice small-scale farming, ranging from two to five acres. This is the reason for the economic plight of the majority of farmers. Worse, they are unable to wait for the right price to exchange rice and wheat, and due to their inability to pay, they are forced to sell their standing crops to wealthy landlords or moneylenders, or at prices below the MSP. Therefore, discussions about breaking the traditional crop cycle and adopting mixed farming are taking a long time. Suggestions for a cotton and pulse revolution were also made in this context. Now, bamboo cultivation has come into focus in Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. Bamboo is used for basketry, farm scaffolding, furniture, and construction. In Punjab, preparations have been made for demonstration planting on over 857 acres. Meanwhile, Himachal is planning to cultivate and process raw bamboo. Haryana is exploring bamboo as an alternative to agroforestry. This approach is gaining traction, but there are no large-scale data on commercial bamboo cultivation in these three states. Work has begun, and results are expected. Bamboo could also be used as an alternative to charcoal and biofuel. Farmers are being encouraged not to sell raw bamboo; they can fetch higher prices if they process it, but this will require the establishment of processing units, work on which is currently underway in Punjab and Haryana. India has a total area of 154,670 square kilometers under bamboo cultivation. A National Bamboo Mission has been established, and according to this, bamboo cultivation has increased by 5,227 square kilometers in the three years from 2021 to 2024. Efforts have begun, leading to 60,000 hectares of bamboo plantations in non-forest areas. A trial phase is currently underway in Punjab, for which the central government has approved Rs 24.9 million (Rs 24.9 million). The central government has allocated a budget of Rs 37.0 million (Rs 37.0 million) for Himachal Pradesh and has already released Rs 16.5 million Rs 16.5 million).
