Bangladesh Constitution ‘Frozen’ Under Yunus Administration, Critics Say

New Delhi: Former Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty on Monday asserted India’s consistently clear position on the political situation in Bangladesh. In an exclusive interview with IANS, he said that India has always maintained that free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections should be held and power should be handed over to the winning party.

Chakravarty said, “India has no biased stance. We will establish relations with any democratically elected party. But there must be a democratic government there that implements the Constitution, which is not yet functional. The Constitution has been kept in a ‘freezer’. No long-term plans can be made with such a government, because tomorrow someone will come and change everything. Therefore, India’s stance has been to observe and then act. India will never interfere in their internal affairs, but it can express concern. We have expressed concern over the violence against Hindus there.”

Yunus government declared ‘illegal’, questions raised on atrocities against minorities

Former diplomat Veena Sikri called the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus “illegal,” saying it should be held globally accountable for attacks on minorities and should not be allowed to remain in power.

Highlighting the atrocities against Hindu minorities, he said, “What was done to Dipu Chandra Das is barbaric and medieval. It is unacceptable for 21st-century civilization. It seems people have been provoked, as Bangladeshis generally do not resort to such brutality. The allegation that someone committed contempt has proven to be completely false.”

Sikri said that Yunus’s government remained silent even amid violence against Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Sufis, and Ahmadis. He also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s request to Yunus to protect minorities at the time of his appointment.

Situation in Bangladesh is deteriorating, anti-India forces are increasing their political influence

Former diplomat K.P. Fabian said, “The reality is that Bangladesh is heading towards anarchy and chaos. One reason for this is that interim Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has failed to control the situation, allowing anti-India forces, such as Jamaat-e-Islami, to gain political influence. Furthermore, Pakistan and China are actively trying to disrupt India-Bangladesh relations.”

He also said that violence is escalating, with preparations underway for fraudulent non-participatory elections, and actions against Hindu professors and journalists are ongoing, and the situation is extremely worrying.
