Bangladesh: Four Hindu Family Members Found Dead Inside Locked Home, Police Probe Underway

Dhaka: A retired Hindu schoolteacher, his wife, daughter and 12-year-old son were found dead inside their locked home in Rangpur city, Bangladesh, under suspicious circumstances. Police have launched an investigation into the deaths.

The bodies were recovered around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday from a house in the Daspara (Machhuapara) area of Rangpur city.

Four family members found dead

The deceased were identified as 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, a retired teacher of Rangpur Zilla School; his 50-year-old wife, Pritilata Chakraborty; their 23-year-old daughter, Agami Chakraborty Prarthi; and their 12-year-old son, Priyam Chakraborty.

According to local reports, Ganapati had retired from Rangpur Zilla School on December 31 last year. His daughter had completed her master’s degree in English earlier this year, while his son was a Class 5 student.

Relatives became concerned after they were unable to contact the family. Their mobile phones were reportedly switched off from Thursday night.

Relatives raise questions

Puja Chakraborty, Pritilata’s younger sister, said she last spoke to her sister on Thursday afternoon. After failing to contact the family, relatives went to the house on Saturday night.

The main gate was locked and the lights inside the house were switched off. Police later reached the spot, broke open the lock and recovered the bodies.

Relatives said they were shocked by the deaths and claimed Ganapati had no known enemies. They said the family had recently built a new house in the area.

Police, forensic teams investigate

Police, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Detective Branch are jointly investigating the case.

Subir Choudhury, in-charge of the Rangpur Metropolitan CID, said the bodies of the mother and daughter were found near the staircase, while Ganapati’s body was recovered from the roof. The body of the 12-year-old boy was found under a bed.

The exact cause of death, motive and sequence of events remain unclear. Forensic teams are examining evidence collected from the house as investigators work to determine what happened to the family.

Police have not yet established whether the deaths were the result of a crime or another cause. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
