Dhaka: At least three people were injured after a crude bomb exploded during a rally organised by Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party (NCP) in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, late Monday night. The incident occurred during an event that was critical of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and marked the beginning of the party’s nationwide protest campaign.

Blast Disrupts NCP’s Anti-Sheikh Hasina Rally

The explosion took place at around 9:45 pm at the Eidgah Ground near Savar Thana shortly after senior NCP leaders arrived at the venue. The rally was part of the party’s month-long “July March” programme, which seeks political and economic reforms and has been sharply critical of Sheikh Hasina’s leadership.

The blast triggered panic among hundreds of supporters attending the gathering, with party workers and participants rushing to safety.

Three Injured, Investigation Underway

According to party leaders, at least three people sustained injuries in the explosion and were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. One of the injured reportedly suffered serious wounds, while authorities launched an investigation to determine the nature of the explosive device and identify those responsible.

Police officials confirmed that the blast occurred during the public meeting and said investigations are underway.

NCP Leaders Blame Security Failure

Senior NCP leaders, including Convener Nahid Islam, were present on the stage when the explosion occurred. Following the incident, Nahid Islam questioned the role of the administration, alleging that there had been serious security lapses at the venue and demanding accountability from authorities.

The party also organised an immediate protest march condemning the attack and called for swift action against those behind the blast.

Political Tensions Continue in Bangladesh

The explosion comes amid heightened political tensions in Bangladesh, where the National Citizen Party has been mobilising supporters through its “July March” campaign. The attack has renewed concerns over political violence and security as opposition groups continue their protests and public outreach programmes.

Authorities have not yet announced any arrests, and the motive behind the explosion remains under investigation.
