Bangladesh Sees Another Dark Day as Hindu Man Lynched, Canadian MP Reacts

Ottawa: Canadian Conservative Party MP Shuv Mazumdar has strongly condemned the lynching of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district. He said the incident shows that the forces of hatred and religious extremism are still not fully controlled in the country.

‘Another dark chapter is unfolding in Bangladesh’

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Mazumdar said the incident is a reminder of generations of pain. He said Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu factory worker, was brutally beaten by a mob, his body was desecrated, and he was burned by hanging him from a tree, allegedly on charges of blasphemy. Majumdar said this brutality echoes the chaos and atrocities witnessed 50 years ago.

Attacks on minorities continue: MP

The Canadian MP said that Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and other religious minority communities in Bangladesh are facing continued targeted violence reminiscent of past pogroms. He cited thousands of violent incidents since the political transition in August 2024, with hundreds reported as late as 2025. These incidents include attacks on homes, shops, temples, and places of worship, murders, sexual violence, kidnappings, and forced displacement.

Demands accountability from the interim government

Majumdar said that although the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has condemned some incidents and announced arrests, radical elements are gaining encouragement due to the lack of stable governance in the country. He stated that all citizens of Bangladesh should enjoy equal protection, civil rights, and freedom from oppression. He also demanded an immediate end to violence against minorities and the government be held accountable.

Meanwhile, New York State Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar also condemned the incident, calling it part of a dangerous pattern of ongoing violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. She said that the murder of Dipu Chandra Das calls for global solidarity for human rights, justice, and religious freedom.
