Bathinda: Rapist Cloth Merchant Sentenced 7 years jail

The Bathinda District Court has convicted cloth merchant Satpal Grover in a 13-year-old rape case and sentenced him to seven years of imprisonment.

According to reports, a school teacher residing within the jurisdiction of the Kotwali Police Station committed suicide in March 2013 by consuming poison after writing a suicide note.

The victim was referred to a private hospital in critical condition. Subsequently, the Kotwali Police registered a case against cloth merchant Satpal Grover under charges of rape and various other sections of the law, based on the woman’s statement.

Following the registration of the case, the police arrested the accused cloth merchant. After a lengthy legal process in court, the District Court—concurring with the arguments presented by Public Prosecutor Harbhupinder Pal Singh Chauhan—sentenced the cloth merchant to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 on charges of rape.

The woman had alleged that her family shared an acquaintance with Satpal Grover, as a result of which he frequently visited their home. The woman stated that one day, while she was alone at home, Satpal Grover entered her bedroom and attempted to force himself upon her. At that moment, her husband and brother arrived, prompting the cloth merchant to flee the scene. Following this incident, the woman consumed poison with the intent of committing suicide.
