BDPO arrested in Ludhiana for accepting Rs 15,000 Bribe

In Maloud, Ludhiana, the Vigilance Department has arrested Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO) Sukhjit Kaur red-handed while she was accepting a bribe of ₹15,000. This operation was carried out while a program for distributing development grants to various Panchayats was underway within her office premises.

According to reports, Jagwinder Singh, the Sarpanch (village head) of Sohiyan a village falling under the Maloud block—had lodged a complaint with the Vigilance Department. The complaint alleged that BDPO Sukhjit Kaur was demanding a bribe in exchange for clearing bills related to the supply of interlocking bricks. Acting on this complaint, and under the directives of SSP (Vigilance) Varinder Singh Brar, a dedicated team devised a strategy and laid a trap.

Vigilance Team Raids the Scene

According to Vigilance sources, the accused BDPO had already received payments calculated at the rate of one rupee per brick, along with an additional sum of ₹5,000 ostensibly for the installation of grass/turf. Despite having received these amounts, she continued to demand further payments. Today, when Sarpanch Jagwinder Singh arrived at the BDPO’s office with the ₹15,000 bribe money, the waiting Vigilance team raided the premises and apprehended the officer in the act of accepting the bribe.

It is also noteworthy that, at that very moment, a grant distribution ceremony for the Panchayats was being held within the office—an event for which tents and chairs had already been arranged. The suddenness of the operation left the people present at the scene completely astonished. Following the operation, the Vigilance team escorted the accused BDPO to their office in Ludhiana, where she is currently undergoing further interrogation.

A case has been registered in this matter under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further legal proceedings have been initiated. The Vigilance Department is now also investigating whether any other individuals may be involved in this case.
