Beijing issues rainstorm, flood alerts amid heavy downpours

Beijing: Authorities in Beijing issued rainstorm and flood warnings on Monday as the city prepares for heavy rainfall, raising concerns about flash floods and landslides in mountainous regions.

The meteorological department upgraded the rainstorm alert from orange to the highest level, red, at noon. Forecasts predict widespread heavy rain from 8 pm on Monday until Tuesday morning, with most parts of the city expected to receive over 150 mm of rain within six hours, and some areas potentially exceeding 300 mm.

A high-risk warning has been issued for flash floods, mudslides, and landslides in the hilly and mountainous zones, while low-lying areas could experience severe waterlogging. Residents have been urged to take necessary precautions, according to Xinhua news agency.

Since July 26, persistent rains driven by warm, humid air from the edge of the subtropical high have affected districts like Miyun, Huairou, and Yanqing. Miyun’s northeast area saw particularly heavy rainfall, exceeding 300 mm, which led to flooding and landslides, impacting several villages and disrupting roads, power, and communications.

More than 3,000 residents were evacuated from Miyun on Sunday, including approximately 100 people from Xiwanzi and Gaolingzi villages after their homes flooded. Cui Di, Deputy Chief of Shicheng Township, worked overnight to help relocate residents to safer locations.

“Heavy rain hit on Saturday night, causing some homes to flood. By Sunday morning, residents from the most affected areas had been evacuated in three batches,” Cui stated. “During emergencies like this, it’s challenging for everyone. We do our best to make shelters comfortable and ease their anxiety.”

Local authorities have also prepared essential supplies such as mattresses, blankets, bread, and eggs for the displaced residents. Several reservoirs are currently releasing water to control rising levels, while officials have warned the public to stay away from fast-moving river sections.
