Trinamool-Linked Panchayat Chief Among 3 Arrested in Bengal Congress Leader Murder Case

Kolkata: Police on Sunday arrested three persons, including a Trinamool Congress-linked village panchayat chief, in connection with the murder of Congress leader Anisur Rahman and his 24-year-old son Abu Sufian in West Bengal’s Nadia district.

The incident took place late Saturday night at Bethuadahari under Nakashipara Police Station.

Fatema Bibi, head of Haranagar village panchayat in Nadia district, was among those arrested. Her husband, Jubbar Sheikh, an influential Trinamool leader in the area, is already in judicial custody. Local Congress leaders have accused him of being the mastermind behind the murders.

Two of Fatema’s associates, Ali Mandal and Mithun Sheikh, were also arrested. The three accused were produced before a court after medical examination, and police sought their custody.

Father, Son Shot and Attacked

According to police, Anisur Rahman and Abu Sufian were returning home in a four-wheeler on Saturday night when unidentified miscreants allegedly blocked their way and opened fire.

The vehicle was forcibly stopped, following which the father and son were allegedly attacked with sharp weapons. Both reportedly died on the spot due to excessive bleeding.

Police from Nakashipara Police Station reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and began an investigation.

Congress Demands Strict Action

The Nadia district Congress leadership alleged that Anisur Rahman and his son were working to strengthen the party’s position as the principal opposition force in the district following the recent Assembly polls.

A local Congress leader alleged that the father and son had become a target of local Trinamool leaders because of their political activities.

The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee observed a ‘black day’ across the state in protest against the killings.

Both current and former state Congress presidents, Suvankar Sarkar and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, demanded a speedy investigation and strict punishment for those responsible.
