A 28-year-old man died in Bengaluru after clinging to a friend’s moving car during a drunken argument and being fatally injured in a crash, police said on Tuesday. The horrifying incident was captured on the vehicle’s dashcam.
The incident unfolded late Sunday night after a local cricket tournament in the Kamma Sandra area of Bengaluru’s Hebbagodi police limits. The victim, identified as Prashanth M, and his friend Roshan Hegde were reportedly drinking after the match when a spat broke out between them.
Police say the argument escalated beginning over a cigarette lighter and aggravated by alcohol turning violent with both men allegedly assaulting each other with beer bottles before Prashanth tried to stop Roshan from driving off.
Dashcam footage later reviewed by police showed Prashanth clinging to the car’s door as Roshan allegedly accelerated recklessly along Veerasandra-Kammasandra Road. The vehicle lost control, struck a compound wall, and then crashed into a tree, leaving Prashanth with severe head injuries.
Despite being rushed to a hospital, Prashanth succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Roshan, who also suffered injuries in the crash, is undergoing medical care.
Initially recorded as a road accident, the case has now been reclassified as murder after evidence from the dashcam and a complaint by Prashanth’s mother indicated that the crash was deliberate. Roshan was arrested by the Hebbagodi police following the investigation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police M. Narayana highlighted that the evidence suggests intentional reckless driving rather than an accidental crash.
The chilling dashcam footage played a key role in revealing the true nature of the incident, transforming what was first seen as a tragic accident into a heinous act of violence. Police and local residents expressed shock that a friendly outing after a cricket game ended in such a tragic loss of life.
