Engineering Student Raped on College Campus in Bengaluru, Accused Arrested

Bengaluru: In a shocking incident, an engineering student was allegedly raped inside her college premises in Bengaluru, police said on Friday. The assault reportedly took place within the limits of the Hanumanthanagar police station.

Accused Arrested and Remanded

The police have arrested the accused, identified as 21-year-old Jeevan Gowda, a fellow student at the same college. He was produced before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody.

According to officials, the accused and the victim were acquaintances and had been studying together. Gowda, who had failed an exam, became junior to the victim by a year.

Incident Took Place on College’s Sixth Floor

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused allegedly took the victim to the sixth floor of the college building, dragged her into a washroom, and committed the crime.

The incident reportedly occurred on October 10 between 1:30 p.m. and 1:50 p.m., but came to light only after the victim filed a complaint on October 15.

Police said the victim had gone to meet Gowda to collect some belongings. He later called her again and tried to forcibly kiss her. When she resisted and attempted to leave, he followed her to the sixth floor, where the assault occurred.

During the incident, the accused allegedly snatched her phone, and later called her offering pills, police sources said.

Victim Confided in Friends Before Filing Complaint

The traumatised victim first confided in her friends, who advised her to inform her parents. Her parents then approached the police, leading to the immediate arrest of the accused.

A case has been registered under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for rape. Further investigation is underway.

Political Outcry Over Rising Crimes Against Women

The incident has sparked widespread outrage over the safety of students in educational institutions.

Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka has written to the National Commission for Women (NCW), urging urgent intervention. In his letter, he highlighted the deteriorating law and order situation in Karnataka, stating that 979 sexual assault cases have been reported across the state in the past four months — including 114 in Bengaluru alone.

“Our women and children are living in fear,” Ashoka said, demanding stronger policing and accountability.
