India’s tech capital, Bengaluru, is grappling with a new problem—rising insecurity in the city. A number of recent incidents involving delivery agents and cab drivers have created an atmosphere of fear among citizens. Services that once symbolized convenience are now raising questions about safety.
Shocking Cases in a Row
Last week, a 22-year-old delivery agent was arrested in the RT Nagar area—allegedly molesting a Brazilian model while delivering a parcel.
A few month back, a group of cab drivers chased a woman’s car for overtaking them and attacked her father in an apartment complex.
Police Data Reveals
According to the Bengaluru Traffic Police, delivery riders were booked for over 17,000 traffic violations.
These include serious violations such as speeding, riding without a helmet, and entering no-entry zones.
Pressures of the Gig Economy and Mental Stress
Experts believe that the app-based gig work model is at the root of this problem. The pressure of fast delivery and long shifts, low wages, and unstable work are causing stress for many workers.
According to experts, “These workers are under immense pressure to meet targets and deadlines. Unless background checks and mental health support systems are improved, such cases are likely to increase.”
Administration’s Strictness and the Way Forward
The police are now planning to introduce strict ID checks and re-verification for delivery agents and drivers. At the same time, platform companies have also been urged to ensure adherence to safety guidelines.
Conclusion
Most delivery agents and drivers are working honestly, but some cases have raised questions about the entire system.
Until technology-based services are accompanied by strong monitoring and accountability, Bengaluru citizens will continue to worry about whether “convenience is costing more than safety?”
