In Indian geopolitical panorama, China must occupy top space considering power and security dynamics of region. Its habitual irritational snares, both diplomatic and military are aimed at containing and keeping India on tenterhooks economically, militarily and diplomatically subduing it regionally. The latest Chinese salvo on 13 Oct,2026, disputing India’s sovereignty over Union Territory of Ladakh and opposition to India assigning standard names to 28 peaks, mountains, land areas, rivers, lakes and water bodies is classic example of Chinese approach. It is at its old habit of playing boundary dispute looking for an albie to alter status quo in eastern Ladakh its western theatre command domain. The statement by Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson explicit. It says “China has never recognized the so called ‘Union Territory of Ladakh’ unilaterally and illegally established by India. The move is illegal and invalid and cannot change the fact that the relevant areas in the western sector of China-India boundary have always belonged to China”. Ministry of external affairs in response to Chinese statement said “It is reiterated that UT of Ladakh is an integral and inalienable part of India. No amount of denial by the Chinese side can change this established fact”. India in conventional diplomatic behavior rebutted Chinese propaganda and reiterated region being inalienable part of India. Alongside diplomatic riposte, need is to take Chinese statement with concern and seriousness considering its past petulant military record. Statement has serious military and security connotations for Ladakh and India’s sovereignty over the region. The dissection of statement reveals Chinese misplaced claim in Ladakh. Trigger basically is twofold, creation of separate union territory of Ladakh in 2019, and now inclusion of locations within geographical Indian control and inside and adjacent to Chinese controlled Aksai Chin and areas close to its G219 highway. Aksai chin is sovereign Indian land, part of Ladakh under illegal Chinese occupation. China forgot that it has been blatantly indulging in naming strategy in Arunachal Pradesh since long ignoring Indian objections. Chinese military and diplomatic strategy are to create historical legacy by assigning names to places under sovereign Indian control. What China is doing on and off in Arunachal Pradesh is correct and when India asserts its right over its sovereign territories under Chinese illegal control, it is wrong. Chinese political and diplomatic hypocrisy at its worst. China is rattled. Chinese foreign ministry strong riposte to India’s perfectly correct stance calls for both military and diplomatic vigilance, lest caught off guard as happened in 2020 in Eastern Ladakh. Military vigilantism must be spread all across the front and India need to avoid a kneeling weak-kneed approach and must show both military and diplomatic fangs to China. Security establishment and government must not lower guard. Such approach will require quick decision making, huge investment in defense infrastructure, robust military industrial base, robust supply lines, political peace in the region and professional human resource polices for military. It must maintain deployment levels to thwart any Chinese localized military adventurism anywhere all along the front which cannot be ruled out. There is also need to rethink and revisit perils of dual command structure under two ministries and integration of ITBP with army, to strengthen defense posture all along Line of actual control. Compartmentalized and silo approach must be buried. Let’s devolve deep into Chinese strategic obsession with Ladakh and its current stand. In 2010 Chinese state-owned Xinhua and global times published by ‘Peoples Daily”, mouth piece of communist party described ChinaIndia border at 2000 Kms ahead of Chinese premier Wen Jiabao’s visit from 15-17 December 2010. China cutting off about 1488 Kms from common Indo-China border was basically signaling at parts of J&K, now UT of Ladakh. Subsequent military events, Doklam of 2017, Galwan of 2020 and military buildup in Taksing area of upper Subansiri district Arunachal Pradesh of 2026 prove that China has not abandoned its strategic aims in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh which calls for enhanced military footprints in Ladakh and all along Line of actual control. India also must not forget Chinese claims in western and Eastern sector, it’s continuous military pricking. Its establishment of dual border villages called “Xiaokang” is part of overall plan to strengthen its historical claims to area and strengthening military posture. Another reason for Chinese response is its uneasiness with Indian connectivity and military infrastructure development in Ladakh which it considers threatening to its sovereignty and territorial ambitions. Rather in long run, if India decides to militarily claim Aksai Chin, will put Chinese integration and connectivity at stake and may even have repercussions for China-Pakistan economic corridor. The region is high altitude, geographically treacherous provided natural security buffer to India in the region. Tibetan and Xinjiang plateaus have been militaries nightmare, difficult in communication and traversing provided India a natural buffer. Construction of G-219 high way has eroded that geographical buffer providing fast mobility to China through laterals right up to Line of actual control. Mobilization and deployment of troops, heavy military equipment including artillery and logistics across high altitude terrain becomes fast and swift placing India in difficult position. China is rattled with Indias Infrastructure development in Ladakh and giving standard names to location in Ladakh is challenging Chinese control over Aksai chin. China fears India may at some point of time go for physical occupation of region. Thus, naming has implications. It establishes and strengthens Indian legality and claim over Aksai Chin and exposes Chinese hypocrisy since it challenges Chinese hegemonic intentions over Ladakh. Aksai Chin occupies strategic space for China in its connectivity and development initiatives and have both national and international ramifications for China if it loses Aksai Chin. China governs the region as part of Xinjiang i.e. Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region (Hotan prefecture) and Tibet, i.e. Tibet autonomous region Nagri prefecture). In realism, legally and historically it is integral part of Ladakh. Chinese strategic G-219 highway a vital 10000 kms strategic border corridor from KomKanas in Xinjiang to Dongxing in Guangxi in part passes through Aksai Chin. Modernizations have turned it into all-weather military highway having implications for India. What if India succeeds in its military campaign to claim Aksai chin in near future. It puts China integration with Tibet and also CPEC at stake diluting Chinese hegemony and regional influence. It is the reason China is uncomfortable with Indian civil and military infrastructure development in Ladakh and current naming’s. It will be naïve that China will agree to Indias perception of Line of actual control and India’s point of view in resolution of boundary dispute despite plethora of mechanisms existing on ground to resolve boundary disputes. These mechanisms have to some extent ensured extension of peace post Galwan though pin pricking from China continues. What India may think as bullying Chinese approach all along Line of actual control, is practical China power muscle flexing approach to rattle adversary economically, militarily and diplomatically What India need to do considering Chinese belligerent approach on boundary dispute. In addition to placing reliance on various mechanisms to discuss and resolve boundary dispute, place heavy reliance on sagacity of military leadership and prepare a military road map for next decade aimed at reclaiming occupied territories all along line of actual control. This approach has its own pitfalls, unless accompanied by huge infrastructural development, and sound military industrial base with robust military human resource policies. It is not only the man behind the machine which fights enemy, it is high morale and motivation which determines the effectiveness of man behind the machine. China is a military bully and Indian options are limited. Government need to decide which way it want to go, continue with peace overtures, combine peace with robust military preparations. Nation must not lower guard and prepare to fight China economically, diplomatically and militarily. In the end military strength will determine alignment of line of actual control and trajectory of India-China relations in years to come.
BEWARE OF CHINA DON’T LET GUARD DOWN
