UP Tourist Found Dead Near Bhagsunag Waterfall in Dharamsala

A tourist from Uttar Pradesh was found dead near the popular Bhagsunag Waterfall in Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities said the man was discovered lying unconscious on a hillside trail near the waterfall, one of the region’s most visited tourist attractions.

The incident has raised concerns among locals and tourists regarding safety at high-altitude trekking routes around the waterfall area, which attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Body Found Near Trekking Trail

According to police officials, the body of the tourist was found about 250 metres above a café located near the waterfall on a hillside trail frequently used by trekkers heading toward Triund and nearby viewpoints.

The discovery was first reported by a forest guard who noticed a man lying unconscious in the area and immediately alerted the police station in nearby McLeodganj. Upon receiving the information, a police team rushed to the spot along with local volunteers to assess the situation.

Authorities then transported the man to the Zonal Hospital in Dharamsala, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Deceased Identified as Gorakhpur Resident

Police later identified the deceased as Rahul, a resident of Gorakhpur district in Uttar Pradesh.

Initial inquiries revealed that the tourist had reportedly travelled to Dharamsala with friends as part of a sightseeing trip. The group had planned trekking and sightseeing activities in the scenic mountain region, which is known for its trekking routes, waterfalls, and panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range.

However, during the journey near the waterfall route, the man allegedly started feeling unwell, according to preliminary statements given to the police by people accompanying him.

Suspected Heart Attack Behind Death

Police officials stated that a suspected heart attack is being considered as the possible cause of death, though the exact reason will only be confirmed after the post-mortem examination.

Medical experts say sudden altitude changes, physical exertion during trekking, and underlying health conditions can sometimes trigger cardiac problems among tourists visiting mountainous regions.

Authorities have sent the body for a post-mortem examination, which will help determine the exact cause of death.

Police Begin Legal Proceedings

Officials from the McLeodganj police station have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as part of the standard legal process for investigating unexplained deaths.

Police said further action will depend on the findings of the medical report and statements from the deceased’s companions.

The body has been kept at the hospital mortuary until legal formalities are completed and the family is informed.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted safety concerns around popular tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh. Bhagsunag Waterfall, located near McLeodganj, is a well-known trekking and sightseeing spot that attracts both domestic and international tourists.

Local authorities have often urged visitors to exercise caution while trekking or exploring high-altitude areas, especially if they have underlying medical conditions or are not accustomed to strenuous physical activity.

Officials also advise tourists to stay hydrated, avoid overexertion, and travel in groups while exploring remote trails.
