Bharat Tiwari Encounter: Post-Mortem Finds Five Bullet Injuries

New Delhi: The post-mortem report in the Bharat Tiwari encounter case has revealed that the 27-year-old sustained five bullet wounds, adding a fresh dimension to the ongoing controversy surrounding his death in Bihar’s Bhojpur district. A judicial inquiry is already underway to examine the circumstances of the June 17 encounter.

Post-Mortem Report Details Five Bullet Injuries

According to the post-mortem report accessed by IANS, Bharat Tiwari suffered five bullet injuries on different parts of his lower body.

The report states that the first bullet struck the upper front portion of his left thigh, while the second hit the inner side of the middle section of the left thigh. The third bullet struck the inner side of the middle of the right thigh. The fourth entered the right thigh from the inner side and exited through the outer side. The fifth bullet struck the middle of the left leg from the rear.

The findings have come amid continued scrutiny of the police encounter.

Who Was Bharat Tiwari?

Bharat Tiwari was a resident of Bilauti village in Bihar’s Bhojpur district and was known locally for raising issues related to land rights, rehabilitation and the concerns of displaced families. According to local residents, he had actively supported villagers in matters concerning land acquisition and rehabilitation.

Following his death, villagers installed a memorial signboard at the encounter site and proposed naming a newly developing settlement Shaheed Bharat Nagar Javainya in his memory. However, the proposal has not received official approval from the Bihar government.

Why Was Bharat Tiwari Encountered?

Bharat Tiwari was killed in a police encounter in Bilauti village under the Shahpur police station area on June 17.

According to Bihar Police, officers opened fire in self-defence after Tiwari allegedly fired at the police during an operation. However, his family has disputed the police version, alleging that he had already discarded his weapon before he was shot. The family has also claimed that video footage supports its version of events and has demanded an independent investigation into the encounter.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being examined by a judicial inquiry headed by retired Patna High Court judge Vinod Kumar Sinha.

Constable Suspended Over Public Statements

In a related development, the East Champaran Police suspended Constable Ashish Kumar Tiwari, posted at the Motihari Police Lines, after he allegedly made public statements regarding the encounter case.

According to police officials, the constable identified himself as Bharat Tiwari’s brother while commenting on the case through social media and media organisations. Following a departmental inquiry, disciplinary action was taken against him.

East Champaran Superintendent of Police Swarn Prabhat said the matter was investigated by the concerned Deputy Superintendent of Police before the suspension was ordered.

Villagers Demand Official Recognition in Tiwari’s Memory

Meanwhile, residents of Bilauti village in Bhojpur have initiated efforts to preserve Bharat Tiwari’s memory by proposing that a newly developing settlement be named Shaheed Bharat Nagar Javainya.

Supporters have installed a signboard at the site of the encounter carrying Bharat Tiwari’s photograph, the date of his death, and the message, “Your sacrifice will always be remembered.”

According to local residents, nearly 74 houses have been allotted to families displaced from Javainya village. Community members have urged the Bihar government to officially recognise the proposed name and address issues related to land and rehabilitation that Bharat Tiwari had allegedly raised during his lifetime.

The signboard also mentions the involvement of the Yuva Parivartan Foundation in Shahpur. However, the naming initiative remains a local effort, and no official notification has been issued by the government.
