Bihar Bridge Accident: Under-Construction Bridge Launcher Collapses In Vaishali, Several Injured

A major accident occurred in Bihar’s Vaishali district on Thursday morning when a launcher being used for construction of a bridge on a four-lane highway collapsed, injuring several labourers and trapping one worker beneath the iron structure.

The incident took place around 9:30 a.m. near Jalalpur village under Lalganj block. According to local residents, around five to seven labourers were injured and taken to hospital. One worker, reportedly from neighbouring Muzaffarpur district, remained trapped beneath the structure and was said to be in critical condition.

Worker Trapped Under Collapsed Structure, Rescue Operation Underway

Rescue teams used gas cutters to remove portions of the iron structure and reach the trapped worker. Villagers said they provided him with water while waiting for rescue personnel to arrive.

The collapse occurred at an under-construction overbridge site on the Gandak River corridor, around half a kilometre before the river near Jalalpur village, according to eyewitnesses.

As rescue efforts continued, a large number of residents gathered at the site and expressed anger over what they described as delays in the emergency response.

Safety Concerns Raised At Construction Site

Villagers and workers alleged that adequate safety equipment, including safety belts, had not been provided at the site. They also claimed that emergency arrangements were inadequate following the collapse. These allegations could not be independently verified.

Some residents further alleged that parts of the structure had shown signs of sinking before the accident, raising questions about construction quality. These claims are also yet to be independently verified.

Police, Administrative Officials Reach Spot

Gopal Mandal, SDPO of Lalganj Sadar-2, along with police personnel, Block Development Officer Sujit Kumar, local representatives and other administrative officials reached the site to oversee rescue and crowd-management efforts.

Tensions reportedly escalated during the rescue operation, with an agitated crowd allegedly vandalising the construction company’s camp. Chairs, tables and CCTV cameras were reportedly damaged.

Vaishali Senior Superintendent of Police Shubhank Mishra later reached the spot and reviewed the situation.

Investigation Ordered Into Bridge Launcher Collapse

The project is part of a nearly 38.8-km road corridor connecting Bakarpur in Saran district with Manikpur in Muzaffarpur district through Lalganj in Vaishali.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse and the safety measures in place at the construction site. Further details about the condition of the injured workers were awaited.
