New Delhi / Bihar: Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday announced a major infrastructure push that will see India’s first bullet train corridor pass through the state of Bihar, linking Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Siliguri in West Bengal via Patna marking a significant milestone for eastern India’s connectivity and development.
Vaishnaw described the project as a “game‑changer” for Bihar’s economy and transport landscape, highlighting its potential to vastly improve travel times, spur regional growth, and integrate the state into the expanding high‑speed rail network.
The proposed high‑speed rail corridor is part of India’s broader plan to build multiple bullet train routes under the Union Budget 2026‑27, which outlined seven new high‑speed corridors aimed at revolutionizing rail travel across the country.
According to budget announcements and ministerial statements, this corridor will run at speeds of up to 300‑350 km/h, sharply cutting down current long travel durations. The journey between Varanasi and Siliguri, which currently takes over 14–18 hours by conventional rail, is expected to be completed in under three hours once the high‑speed line is operational.
The corridor will include stops at key Bihar stations such as Patna and potentially Katihar, enhancing accessibility for travelers throughout the state.
Rail Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that the new bullet train line will be more than a speed upgrade it will transform the economic landscape by facilitating faster movement of people and goods between the heartland of eastern India and other regions. Improved rail connectivity is expected to boost trade, tourism, healthcare access, education opportunities, and employment prospects across Bihar and neighboring states.
Additionally, the corridor will link with other major high‑speed routes such as Delhi‑Varanasi, creating an expansive economic belt crossing Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, further strengthening inter‑state integration.
The Bihar bullet train project complements the government’s broad vision to create a network of modern, high‑speed rail corridors nationwide. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s 2026‑27 Union Budget allocated record capital outlays for railways, earmarking investments for seven high‑speed corridors spanning thousands of kilometers. These initiatives aim not only to uplift rail infrastructure but also to support sustainable transport and economic growth across regions.
Experts say integration into the high‑speed rail network can position Bihar as a key regional hub, enhancing the state’s competitive edge in logistics and mobility. With detailed planning and implementation still underway, the bullet train corridor through Bihar represents a visionary leap toward faster, more efficient inter‑city connectivity in eastern India.
While specific dates for construction commencement and operational rollout have not yet been publicly confirmed, officials say that this corridor part of the larger high‑speed rail agenda will be developed over the coming years as infrastructure investments and detailed project reports are finalised. The ambitious plan reflects India’s commitment to modernizing its railways and weaving high‑speed travel into the country’s transport fabric.
