Bihar CM Samrat Choudhary inaugurates Belwa Dhar Link Channel project in Sheohar to boost flood control, irrigation

Sheohar: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Sunday inaugurated the construction work of the Belwa Dhar Link Channel in Sheohar district under the ambitious Bagmati-Burhi Gandak River Link Project, a major initiative aimed at improving flood management, irrigation facilities and water resource utilisation across North Bihar.

The inauguration ceremony was held at Belwa village in Piprahi block, marking another step in the state’s efforts to reduce the impact of recurring floods while ensuring better irrigation infrastructure for farmers.

Project to reduce floods and improve irrigation

According to the Bihar Water Resources Department, the Belwa Dhar Link Channel is a key component of the Bagmati-Burhi Gandak River Link Project, which seeks to divert surplus water from the flood-prone Bagmati River to the Burhi Gandak River system.

The project is expected to reduce flood risks in vulnerable districts, improve irrigation coverage, enhance water conservation and ensure more efficient management of river water during the monsoon season.

Officials said the link channel will strengthen Bihar’s flood mitigation strategy while helping farmers access water for agricultural activities during periods of lower rainfall.

Major infrastructure push for North Bihar

The Belwa Dhar Link Channel is expected to play an important role in improving agricultural productivity by ensuring a balanced distribution of water across North Bihar. Besides protecting flood-prone regions, the project is also aimed at reducing crop losses, strengthening rural infrastructure and supporting long-term water security.

The state government has identified the Bagmati-Burhi Gandak River Link Project as one of its key infrastructure initiatives to improve disaster resilience and promote sustainable development in the region.

Government also focusing on new townships and urban development

The inauguration comes days after Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced that the Bihar government plans to develop around 12 new townships across the state, including a proposed township named ‘Tirhut’ in Muzaffarpur.

The government is also working on upgrading existing cities by improving roads, drainage systems, drinking water supply, parks, community centres and housing for economically weaker sections. Alongside urban development, the state has intensified efforts to strengthen irrigation infrastructure and flood control projects to improve the quality of life in both urban and rural areas.
