Patna: A suspected case of food poisoning was reported in Bihar’s Gopalganj district, where 12 members of the same family, including 10 children, fell ill after consuming ‘Fensa’, a traditional dish prepared from colostrum, the first milk produced by a cow after giving birth.

Doctors said all the patients are out of danger and are recovering under medical supervision.

Traditional Dish Shared After Calf’s Birth

The incident occurred in Kritpura village under the Baikunthpur police station area.

According to officials, a cow owned by local resident Anil Sahani had recently given birth to a calf. To celebrate the occasion, the family prepared ‘Fensa’, a traditional delicacy made from colostrum, and shared it with neighbouring family members.

Soon after consuming the dish on Wednesday night, several people developed symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea, following which they were rushed to the Baikunthpur Community Health Centre. After initial treatment, they were referred to Sadar Hospital for specialised medical care.

Doctors Say All Patients Are Recovering

The affected individuals include Priya Kumari, Simran Kumari, Priyanshu Kumari, Rishabh Kumar, Abhiraj Kumar, Monalisa Kumari, Hritik Kumar, Atul Kumar, Manisha Devi, and Rajanti Devi, among others.

The patients are being treated under the supervision of Dr Pankaj Kumar, who said prompt medical attention helped stabilise their condition.

“We have informed the district civil surgeon’s office and the Bihar Health Department. All 12 patients are under close observation and are in the stage of recovery,” he said.

Doctors Advise Caution During Monsoon

Doctors have advised people to avoid consuming stale or improperly stored food, especially during the monsoon season, when the risk of food contamination is higher.

While treating doctors suspect the Fensa consumed by the family was the likely cause of the illness, they noted that food poisoning can result from several factors, including improper preparation, storage, or contamination. The patients continue to remain under observation as a precaution.
