Bihar’s Chhath Festival Nominated for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Recognition

Bihar: In a proud moment for India, Bihar’s vibrant Chhath Festival has been nominated for UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. This ancient festival, deeply rooted in devotion and tradition, celebrates the worship of the Sun God and is a cornerstone of Bihari culture.

The nomination, proposed by India, highlights the festival’s unique rituals and its significance in fostering community bonds.

    What is Chhath Festival?

Chhath Puja, a four-day Hindu festival, is primarily celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Nepal. Dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya, it involves rigorous rituals like fasting, offering prayers at sunrise and sunset, and standing in water bodies to offer ‘arghya’ (offerings). The festival, typically held in October or November, showcases gratitude for life, health, and prosperity.

    • Day 1: Nahay Khay – Devotees bathe and prepare special meals.

    • Day 2: Kharna – A day-long fast ends with kheer and roti offerings.

    • Day 3: Sandhya Arghya – Prayers are offered to the setting sun.

    • Day 4: Usha Arghya – Devotees pray to the rising sun, breaking their fast.

    Why UNESCO’s Recognition Matters

The nomination for UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list underscores Chhath’s cultural and spiritual value. UNESCO’s list aims to preserve traditions that embody human creativity and community identity. If approved, Chhath will join India’s 14 other intangible heritages, like Yoga, Kumbh Mela, and Durga Puja.

    • Cultural Pride: The nomination celebrates Bihar’s heritage on a global stage.

    • Preservation: It ensures the festival’s traditions are safeguarded for future generations.

    • Global Awareness: Recognition will boost tourism and cultural exchange.

    Voices from Bihar

Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar hailed the nomination as “a matter of pride for all Biharis.” He said, “Chhath is not just a festival; it’s our way of life, connecting us to nature and spirituality.” Local devotees, like Sunita Devi from Patna, expressed joy: “This is our festival’s moment to shine globally!”
