Another tragic accident occurred on the Delhi National Highway in Ludhiana. A man died after his bike skidded off near Jugiana on Thursday night, around 10 p.m. The deceased was returning home from work and carrying fruit. Repair work by the NHAI was underway, causing a section of the road to be uprooted.
During this time, the rider lost his balance and fell, and was crushed by a speeding truck coming from behind. He died on the spot after being crushed by the truck’s rear tire. Upon receiving information about the accident, police from Police Station Division No. 7 arrived at the scene, took possession of the body, and sent it for post-mortem.
Resentment among residents
NHAI officials are taking no action on the daily accidents that occur. Locals say that two to four accidents occur on this road every day, but the administration and NHAI (National Highway Authority of India) officials are paying no attention. Passers-by alleged that the road has become uneven in many places due to incomplete repairs. The lack of lighting on the road at night and the work being carried out without warning signs are contributing to a growing number of accidents.
A shopkeeper said, “Someone falls every day. People have reported the matter to the authorities several times, but no action has been taken.” Local residents have demanded that the road work be completed as soon as possible and that proper safety signs and lights be installed during the repairs to prevent further loss of life.
Police have registered a case against the truck driver and launched an investigation.
