BIS Seizes 1,095 Jewellery Articles in Jammu Over Hallmark Mark Misuse

Jammu: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office, seized 1,095 gold-coloured jewellery articles from a jewellery outlet in Jammu during a search and seizure operation over suspected misuse of the BIS Hallmark/Standard Mark.

According to BIS, the outlet representative described the seized items as “coated jewellery”, “imitation jewellery” and “1 GRAM GOLD PLATED JEWELLERY”. These articles are not considered gold alloy jewellery or artefacts under the BIS Hallmarking Scheme. However, the items were found carrying attached tags bearing a triangular mark resembling or purporting to be the BIS Hallmark/Standard Mark.

BIS Seizes Jewellery and Documents Under BIS Act

The jewellery articles, along with documentary evidence, were seized under Section 28 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. BIS said further action would be taken in accordance with the applicable provisions of the BIS Act, Rules and Regulations.

The Bureau said the use of the BIS Hallmark/Standard Mark on tags attached to articles represented as coated or imitation jewellery is an offence under the BIS Act, 2016, as it may create a misleading impression that the jewellery itself has been BIS hallmarked or certified.

BIS Warns Consumers Against Hallmark Mark on Tags

BIS advised consumers not to treat a BIS logo or Hallmark/Standard Mark appearing only on a tag, label or packaging as proof that the jewellery article itself is BIS hallmarked. For hallmarked gold jewellery, the prescribed hallmark should be present on the jewellery article itself.

Consumers have also been advised to verify the six-digit Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) through the “Verify HUID” feature of the BIS CARE App before purchasing hallmarked gold jewellery. BIS guidance states that the HUID can be used to verify the authenticity of hallmarked gold jewellery.

BIS Appeals to Consumers and Jewellers

The Bureau has appealed to consumers and jewellers to report suspected misuse of the BIS Hallmark/Standard Mark through the BIS CARE App or by email. Complaints can also be submitted to the BIS Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office at SIDCO Industrial Complex, Bari Brahmana, Jammu.

BIS said the identity of informants would be kept confidential.
