BIS Raids Jalandhar Shop, Seizes Non-ISI Steel Tape Measures in Enforcement Action

Jalandhar: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s national standards body, conducted an enforcement raid at a seller premises on Kapurthala Road, Jalandhar, Punjab, after receiving specific information regarding violations of mandatory quality certification norms.

The raid was carried out by officials from the BIS Jammu & Kashmir Branch Office as part of a Search and Seizure operation. During the inspection, officials found that the seller was storing and exhibiting steel tape measures of various brands without the mandatory BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark).

A total of around 700 steel tape measures were seized during the operation. According to officials, the products were being sold in violation of the Legal Metrology (Material Measures of Length) (Quality Control) Order, 2023, which mandates BIS certification for such measuring instruments under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

Legal Action Initiated

The violation falls under Section 17(1)(a) of the BIS Act, 2016, and is punishable under Section 29. Offenders may face imprisonment of up to two years, or a fine of not less than ₹2,00,000, or both. Further legal proceedings are being initiated before the competent court.

BIS Consumer Advisory

BIS has urged consumers to verify the authenticity of products through the BIS CARE mobile application, available on Android and iOS platforms. The app allows users to check whether a product is certified under mandatory BIS standards and to verify ISI and Hallmark authenticity.

Consumers have also been encouraged to report violations such as misuse of the ISI mark or sale of uncertified goods through the BIS CARE app or by contacting the BIS Jammu & Kashmir Branch Office.
