Amritsar: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) raided a jewelry outlet in Pratap Bazaar, Chheharta, Amritsar, and seized 95 gold ornaments. The total weight of these ornaments is 467.44 grams. The Jammu and Kashmir branch of the BIS took action on October 22nd after receiving information about alleged violations of hallmarking rules.
BIS officials inspected the gold jewelry on sale at the shop and seized 95 ornaments for non-compliance with the prescribed hallmarking rules.

91 ornaments incompletely hallmarked, 4 lacking BIS hallmark
According to a BIS press release, 91 of the 95 seized ornaments weighed 447.11 grams. These were found to be incomplete or not hallmarked as per the prescribed standards. Meanwhile, four pieces of jewelry weighing 20.33 grams did not have the prescribed BIS hallmark.
The release stated that some jewelry items had the BIS hallmark logo and purity marks like ‘916’, but did not have the prescribed HUID or full hallmark.
Advice to Check HUID Before Buying Gold
BIS cautions consumers that mere markings like the BIS logo, ‘916’, ’22K916′, or ’18K750′ should not be considered proof of valid hallmarking. It is important to verify the prescribed hallmark and the six-digit alphanumeric HUID when purchasing gold jewelry.
Consumers can use the ‘Verify HUID’ feature available in the BIS CARE app. According to BIS, registration of a jewelry outlet does not guarantee that all jewelry on sale there is BIS hallmarked. Therefore, the hallmark on each piece of jewelry should be checked individually.
Further Action Under the BIS Act
BIS stated that the seized jewelry has been listed and sealed. This action was taken under Section 28 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. The evidence related to the case will be further investigated and action will be taken as per the relevant regulations.
BIS has appealed to the public to report the sale of unhallmarked jewelry, incomplete hallmarks, or suspected misuse of the BIS hallmark through the BIS CARE app. Complaints can also be sent by email to [[email protected]] (mailto:[email protected]) or [[email protected]] (mailto:[email protected]).
Consumers can also report information to the Bureau of Indian Standards’ Jammu and Kashmir branch office in Bari Brahmana, Jammu. According to BIS, the identity of the informant is kept confidential.
