BJP’s new state committee announced in West Bengal, list of 34 office bearers released

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced the names of 34 members of the new West Bengal state committee. Party Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya has already been elected as the state president. The new committee includes 12 vice presidents, 5 general secretaries, 12 secretaries, 1 treasurer, 2 joint treasurers, 1 office secretary, and 1 joint office secretary.

This announcement comes as BJP national president and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday night. Nadda will chair a crucial meeting of the new state committee on Thursday, where the party’s strategy for this year’s assembly elections will be discussed.

Several prominent faces in key positions

Prominent names among the vice-presidents include former Union Minister of State Nishith Pramanik, MLA Agnimitra Paul, MP Manoj Tigga, MLA Deepak Barman, and journalist-turned-politician Jagannath Chatterjee.

Among the general secretaries are MP Soumitra Khan, Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, and former MP and actress-turned-politician Locket Chatterjee. Shankar Ghosh, the BJP’s chief whip in the Assembly, has been appointed secretary.

Front leaders also announced, focus on organization

The BJP also announced the leaders of its three alliance fronts. MP Khagen Murmu has been given the responsibility of the Scheduled Tribes Front, Dr. Indranil Khan the Youth Front, Falguni Patra the Women’s Front, and Ali Hussain the Minority Front.

According to a senior party member, the new committee has been formed with two things in mind—first, a balance between old guard and new members; and second, the inclusion of public representatives who will focus on organizational work, rather than contesting elections themselves.
