BJP Backs RSS Chief’s ‘Hindu Rashtra’ Remark, Oppn Hits Back

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday came out in support of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s remarks on ‘Hindu Rashtra’, triggering a sharp political debate across the country. BJP leaders said the statement reflected India’s cultural identity and should not be misinterpreted as being against the Constitution.

Party spokespersons maintained that Hindu Rashtra is a civilizational concept, not a political or theocratic one, and accused the Opposition of deliberately distorting the RSS chief’s remarks for political mileage.

Opposition Cites Constitution

Opposition parties, however, strongly objected to the statement, asserting that India is governed by its Constitution, not by religious ideology. Congress and other Opposition leaders said the repeated references to Hindu Rashtra undermine the country’s secular framework and threaten constitutional values.

Senior Opposition leaders accused the BJP and RSS of attempting to blur the line between religion and governance, especially with elections approaching in several states.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat recently remarked that India is inherently a Hindu Rashtra, stating that the country’s culture and traditions are rooted in Hindu values. He also said that this identity does not exclude people of other faiths and promotes coexistence.

The comments, however, reignited an old debate on the nature of the Indian state and the role of religion in public life.

Political Heat Ahead of Elections

The issue has once again highlighted the ideological divide between the BJP and Opposition parties, with analysts saying such debates are likely to intensify ahead of upcoming elections. While the BJP continues to frame the issue as cultural nationalism, the Opposition insists that the Constitution remains supreme.
