BJP Holds Protest March In Jammu, Accuses Omar Abdullah Govt Of Failing Electoral Promises

Jammu: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday staged a protest march in Jammu against the National Conference (NC)-led government, accusing the Omar Abdullah administration of failing to fulfil its electoral promises and deliver on governance and development.

The protest was led by BJP Jammu and Kashmir unit president Sat Sharma, with BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma also joining the demonstration.

BJP Targets Omar Abdullah Govt Over Governance

BJP supporters marched from areas including Dogra Chowk, Maheshpura and Panjtirthi towards the Civil Secretariat, raising slogans against the NC-Congress alliance and burning effigies of the government.

The BJP alleged administrative inertia, corruption, rising unemployment, inadequate civic amenities, erratic power supply and drinking-water problems under the Omar Abdullah-led government.

Senior party leaders demanded accountability from the administration and called for Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s resignation, alleging that the government had failed to meet the expectations of voters.

Sat Sharma Accuses Govt Of Diverting Attention

Sat Sharma alleged that the government was attempting to divert public attention from its alleged failures by repeatedly raising the issue of restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

He warned that the BJP would expand its agitation to district, town and grassroots levels if the issues raised by the party were not addressed.

The protest saw heavy deployment of police and paramilitary personnel along the march routes and around the Civil Secretariat as tensions between the BJP and the ruling NC government intensified.

Omar Abdullah Criticises Centre Over J&K Statehood

The BJP’s protest comes amid an ongoing political tussle between the NC government and the Centre over the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, during his Independence Day address at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar on August 15, said Jammu and Kashmir’s decision to join the Indian Union was correct but criticised the developments of August 2019.

He described the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories as wrong.

The BJP has been intensifying its opposition to the NC-led government in Jammu, while Omar Abdullah has continued to press the Centre over its promise to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
