BJP Women MPs Demand Action After Opposition Surrounds PM Seat

Women Members of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging him to take strong action against Opposition MPs who they allege surrounded the Prime Minister’s seat and disrupted proceedings during the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address in Parliament. In their letter, BJP women MPs described the February 4 Lok Sabha events as “unfortunate and regrettable” and praised the Speaker for maintaining dignity and decorum amid the chaos.

 Allegations Against Opposition MPs

According to the BJP MPs’ letter, members of the Opposition not only entered the well of the House but also climbed onto tables, tore papers and threw them toward the Speaker’s Chair. They claim some women MPs from opposition parties crossed over to the Treasury Benches, surrounding the Prime Minister’s seat and later approaching the Speaker’s chamber aggressively. The BJP lawmakers urged the Speaker to apply the “strictest possible action” under parliamentary rules against those involved.

 Backing the Speaker’s Conduct

The letter also expressed gratitude and admiration for Speaker Om Birla’s handling of the situation, asserting that he upheld the sanctity and dignity of the Lok Sabha during a moment of significant disruption. They described his tenure as reflective of impartiality and commitment to parliamentary values.

 Political Tensions in Parliament

The letter comes amid heightened political tensions between the ruling BJP and Opposition parties, with both sides exchanging accusations over conduct in the House. A day earlier, women MPs from the Congress wrote to the Speaker rejecting allegations that they threatened the Prime Minister, calling such claims “false and defamatory”. They insisted their protests were peaceful and within democratic norms and accused the ruling party of exerting pressure on the Speaker.

 Broader Context of the Clash

The controversy emerged during the Budget session of Parliament when proceedings became contentious amid disagreements over speaking opportunities and disciplinary actions. The Opposition has criticized the handling of the debate on the President’s Address, while the BJP maintains that Opposition behaviour breached parliamentary decorum and warranted strict responses.
