Body of UP student found in Kurukshetra’s Canal

The body of Rohit, a student from Uttar Pradesh, has been recovered from the Narwana Branch (Bhakra) canal in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district. A search operation for Rohit had been underway since around 11:30 AM on Sunday. Around 2:00 AM, the family spotted the body in the canal.

The family immediately informed the police and diver Pragat Singh. Upon receiving the information, diver Pragat Singh arrived at the scene, retrieved the body, and handed it over to the police. The skin on his hands and feet had begun to deteriorate due to the body remaining in the water for over 60 hours.

Diver Pragat Singh stated that Rohit’s body was recovered near Kirmich Head, approximately 12 kilometers away. His family members had been camping along the canal bank for the past three days. Rohit had been swept away by the strong current near the Mirzapur bridge. The police handed over the body to the family following the post-mortem examination.

Stopped at the canal after seeing children bathing

Rohit had arrived in Kurukshetra with his maternal uncle, Rajveer, on Sunday morning. While returning, he stopped near the Mirzapur bridge after seeing some children bathing in the canal. He told his uncle that he knew how to swim and, given the heat, wanted to take a dip. Although Rajveer initially tried to dissuade him, he eventually gave in to Rohit’s insistence.

Shortly after entering the canal, Rohit became trapped in deep water and the strong current. His uncle raised an alarm to save him, but Rohit was quickly swept away by the water. Rohit was a resident of Manpur Basoli village in the Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh. He was the eldest of five siblings.

Wedding was scheduled for September

According to the family, his marriage had been arranged recently, and the wedding was set to take place in September—about three months later.
