Chennai: The Chennai Police on Friday received an email claiming that a bomb had been planted at the residence of Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan in the city’s Mylapore area.
The alert triggered a swift security response before it was confirmed to be a hoax.
Swift Police Response After Email Alert
Officials at the Estate Police Station received the threat email early Friday morning. Acting immediately, senior police officers, along with sniffer dog squads and bomb detection experts, reached the reported location to secure the area.
However, police later confirmed that Radhakrishnan had vacated the Mylapore residence over a year ago. The Vice President currently resides in a rented apartment in Poes Garden, one of Chennai’s high-security zones.
No Explosives Found; Source of Email Under Probe
Following standard VIP security protocols, bomb squads proceeded to inspect the Poes Garden residence, but found the premises locked. A thorough inspection of the surroundings was carried out, and no suspicious items were detected.
Authorities later confirmed that the threat appeared to be a false alarm, and an investigation has been launched to trace the origin of the email.
Part of a Pattern of Hoax Threats Across Cities
Police sources said this incident is part of a wider wave of hoax bomb threats that have targeted prominent personalities and public institutions across India in recent months.
Since July 2024, more than 150 schools in Delhi and over 25 in Bengaluru have received similar fake bomb threats, prompting large-scale evacuations and emergency responses. Some hospitals were also targeted in separate incidents.
Investigations revealed that many of these emails were sent from servers outside India using encrypted accounts to mask the sender’s identity.
Cybercrime Units Intensify Investigation
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed cybercrime units to strengthen coordination between central and state agencies. Several suspects, including minors, are currently under investigation.
Police officials in Chennai have urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information online, assuring that stringent action will be taken against those responsible for such disruptive hoaxes.
