24 BRS MLAs suspended from Telangana Assembly

In a major political development, 24 MLAs of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) were suspended from the Telangana Legislative Assembly for two days following chaos and disruptions during proceedings.

The action was taken by Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar after repeated protests by opposition members, who allegedly obstructed the smooth functioning of the House.

Protest over alleged illegal mining issue

The disruption began when BRS legislators staged a protest inside the Assembly, demanding the formation of a House Committee to probe alleged illegal mining activities involving Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy.

Despite repeated appeals from the Speaker to maintain order, the protesting MLAs continued sloganeering and gathered near the podium, bringing proceedings to a halt.

The government termed the protest as an attempt to derail legislative business, prompting action against the opposition members.

Government moves resolution for suspension

Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu moved a resolution seeking suspension of the agitating MLAs, stating that their actions were obstructing Assembly proceedings.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy also intervened, urging the protesting members to return to their seats and allow the House to function. He warned that continued disruption would leave the government with no option but to suspend them.

Following this, the House adopted the resolution, and the Speaker announced the suspension of the BRS MLAs for two days.

Senior leaders among those suspended

Prominent BRS leaders, including K. T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao, were among those suspended from the Assembly. The move is significant as it temporarily sidelines key opposition voices during an important session.

Reports indicate that the suspension will remain in effect until the end of the current sitting, preventing the MLAs from participating in discussions and debates.

Ethics panel to examine separate controversy

Alongside the suspension, the conduct of BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy was referred to the Assembly’s Ethics Committee. This followed allegations of inappropriate behaviour inside the House, which further escalated tensions between the ruling party and the opposition.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy stated that strict action would be taken based on the committee’s findings, underlining the government’s stance on maintaining decorum in the Assembly.
