Budgam Police Act Against 24 for Violating VPN Ban Order

Budgam, Jan 3  — Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district have taken action against 24 individuals for allegedly violating a district-level ban on the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), officials said on Saturday. The move comes as part of heightened cyber surveillance and security measures in the region.

According to police officials, the action was initiated after it was found that the individuals continued to use VPN services despite a prohibitory order restricting their usage.

Violation of Official Orders

Budgam Police said the accused were found circumventing internet monitoring mechanisms by using VPNs, in violation of the orders issued by the district administration. The ban was imposed citing public safety, cyber security and misuse of internet services.

Authorities said that VPN usage was restricted to prevent the masking of digital identities and to curb unlawful online activities.

Legal Action Initiated

Police confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated against the 24 individuals under relevant sections of law. Notices have been issued, and further investigations are underway to determine whether the violations were linked to any larger security concerns.

Officials added that similar action may be taken against others found flouting the ban in the future.

Police Issue Public Advisory

Budgam Police have urged residents to strictly adhere to government orders and avoid the use of banned digital tools. “People are advised not to misuse the internet and comply with cyber-related restrictions imposed in the interest of public safety,” a police official said.

Authorities reiterated that strict monitoring would continue, and violations will invite legal consequences.
