Iran warns of fallout after Bushehr strike escalation

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has strongly condemned a recent U.S.-Israeli strike near the Bushehr nuclear power plant, calling it a dangerous escalation that could destabilize the entire Middle East region. He described the attack as a violation of international law and warned that targeting nuclear facilities poses serious risks not only to Iran but also to neighboring countries.

The minister stressed that such actions undermine global security norms and could trigger wider conflict in an already volatile region.

Warning of ‘lethal regional consequences’

Araghchi warned that repeated strikes on nuclear-related sites could lead to “lethal consequences” for the region. He highlighted the risk of radioactive contamination, which could impact millions of people and cause long-term environmental damage.

He further stated that the continuation of such attacks may provoke a broader military response, increasing the chances of a full-scale regional war involving multiple countries.

Attack near nuclear facility raises global concern

The strike reportedly occurred near Iran’s only operational nuclear power plant at Bushehr. While the main facility remained intact and operations were not disrupted, the incident has raised alarm globally due to the sensitive nature of nuclear infrastructure.

International agencies confirmed that there was no increase in radiation levels following the attack but emphasized that any military action near nuclear plants carries severe risks.

IAEA urges restraint amid rising tensions

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed deep concern over the incident. Director General Rafael Grossi warned that nuclear facilities must never be targeted under any circumstances and called for maximum restraint from all sides.

The agency reiterated that even minor damage to such facilities could lead to catastrophic consequences, including potential nuclear accidents.

Iran criticises global silence

Iran also criticized international bodies, including the United Nations and the IAEA, for what it described as a lack of strong condemnation of the attacks. Araghchi argued that this silence has emboldened further strikes on Iranian infrastructure.

He accused the United States and Israel of repeatedly targeting Iran’s nuclear and civilian facilities over recent months, escalating tensions in the region.
