New Delhi: Vote counting for five Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha seat across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Assam was underway on Friday, October 9, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading in key contests in West Bengal and Assam, while actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) faced a competitive fight in Tamil Nadu.
The by-elections were held on October 6 and counting began at 8 am on Friday. The results are being closely watched for their implications for the parties and governments involved, particularly the BJP in West Bengal and Vijay-led TVK in Tamil Nadu.
The six constituencies include Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, Thattanchavady in Puducherry, and the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam.
BJP Takes Lead in West Bengal’s Nandigram and Rejinagar
The BJP established leads in both Nandigram and Rejinagar as counting progressed in West Bengal. The contests are significant as the state’s political landscape has changed following the BJP’s rise to power.
In Nandigram, BJP candidate Hasirani Rath was reported to be leading Congress candidate Milan Pradhan by approximately 9,600 votes after the first round of counting, according to early trends reported by news outlets.
In Rejinagar, BJP candidate Shankharav Sarkar also held a substantial lead. After four rounds, reports indicated that Sarkar was ahead of the Congress candidate by more than 30,000 votes.
The Congress raised allegations of electoral irregularities and demanded repolling in the constituencies. These allegations remain separate from the counting trends, and the reported leads should not be treated as final results.
The bypolls are being watched for indications of voter sentiment in the two constituencies following the change in the state government.
BJP Candidate Leads in Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha Seat
In Assam, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma was leading in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, ahead of AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal and Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora.
According to the Election Commission of India’s available figures updated at 10:06 am, Sharma had received 47,402 votes, compared with 21,107 votes for Ajmal and 6,544 votes for Bora. These figures represented the counting position at that time and were not a final declaration of the result.
The Nagaon by-election became necessary after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi left the party and joined the BJP. The contest is important for the BJP, Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which are competing for the parliamentary seat.
Nagaon recorded a voter turnout of 76.19 per cent, according to reported election figures.
Vijay’s TVK Faces Competition in Tamil Nadu Bypolls
In Tamil Nadu, the by-elections in Madurantakam and Dharapuram have emerged as important contests for Vijay-led TVK, which came to power in the state earlier this year.
The party is facing the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in both constituencies. The contests are being closely monitored because the candidates involved include former AIADMK legislators who joined TVK after the Assembly elections.
In Madurantakam, TVK candidate K. Maragatham Kumaravel was leading in the first round of counting. The Election Commission’s available figures at 10 am showed Kumaravel with 3,571 votes, ahead of DMK candidate I. Paranthamen, who had 2,611 votes. AIADMK candidate S. Kanitha Sampath was in third place with 2,078 votes.
Dharapuram, however, witnessed a more competitive contest. During the early rounds, AIADMK candidate K. Banumathi moved ahead of TVK candidate P. Sathyabama. The Election Commission’s figures after the second round showed Banumathi with 5,573 votes against Sathyabama’s 4,981 votes, while DMK candidate S. Suganya had 4,016 votes.
Later reports indicated that the lead changed as counting progressed, underlining the close nature of the Dharapuram contest. The latest available reports around 11:15 am indicated that TVK had moved ahead again, although the Election Commission’s round-wise figures remain essential for confirming the position.
The results are being viewed as a test of TVK’s electoral strength and the support enjoyed by candidates who switched parties before the bypolls.
Madurantakam recorded a voter turnout of 86.26 per cent, while Dharapuram registered 80.30 per cent, according to reported election figures.
AINRC Leads in Puducherry’s Thattanchavady
In Puducherry, All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) candidate Ashok Anand was leading in the Thattanchavady Assembly constituency, according to the Election Commission’s available results information.
The by-election is significant for the AINRC-led government headed by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy. The seat fell vacant after Rangasamy retained another constituency.
Thattanchavady recorded a voter turnout of 80.81 per cent, lower than the 87.20 per cent reported during the Assembly elections in April.
Counting Continues, Final Results Awaited
The bypoll results are being followed as indicators of political support across the four regions. The BJP’s leads in West Bengal and Assam, the changing contest between TVK and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, and AINRC’s position in Puducherry are among the key developments.
However, leads can change as additional rounds are counted. The figures available during the morning were provisional, and the final winners must be confirmed by the Election Commission of India after counting is completed.
