New Delhi: The IPL 2026 mini-auction kicked off with a bang, with Australian all-rounder Cameron Green being acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a staggering ₹25.20 crore.
Intense Bidding War Between KKR, RR, and CSK
A fierce bidding war ensued between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals for Cameron Green. Chennai Super Kings later joined the fray, making the competition even more exciting. Ultimately, KKR secured Green’s services with a winning bid of ₹25.20 crore.
With this bid, Green became the most expensive foreign player in IPL auction history, surpassing the record held by Mitchell Starc, who was bought by KKR for ₹24.75 crore in the IPL 2024 auction.
Why will Green receive only ₹18 crore despite the ₹25.20 crore bid?
However, Cameron Green will not receive the full ₹25.20 crore. According to IPL rules, his salary for this season will be ₹18 crore (approximately US$1.9 million). The remaining amount will go to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Player Development Program.
This is due to the IPL’s “Maximum Fee Rule,” which states that the maximum amount a foreign player can receive in a mini-auction is the lower of either the highest retention slab (₹18 crore) or the highest bid from the previous mega auction (₹27 crore for Rishabh Pant in 2025).
Green’s IPL Record and First Set Results
Cameron Green has previously played for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He has played 29 matches in the IPL so far, scoring 707 runs and taking 16 wickets.
In the first set of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, players like Devon Conway, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Prithvi Shaw, and Sarfaraz Khan went unsold. Meanwhile, David Miller was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 2 crore.
Despite his excellent form in domestic cricket, Prithvi Shaw found no buyers. Similarly, Sarfaraz Khan also went unsold, even though he recently played a blistering innings of 73 runs off just 22 balls for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
