Campbell Wilson CEO Air India tenders resignation, to give services until successor is hired

Campbell Wilson, the current CEO of Air India, has resigned from his post. However, the company has requested that he remain in his position until a new CEO is appointed, to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.

It is reported that his tenure was originally scheduled to run until September of next year; however, he had already signaled that he did not wish to extend his term. Consequently, the company had initiated the search for a new CEO as early as January 2026. This process has now been accelerated, and a crucial meeting regarding this matter is scheduled for next week.

Campbell Wilson assumed leadership of Air India in July 2022. Prior to this, he spent approximately 26 years at Singapore Airlines, where he held various senior leadership positions. During his tenure, Air India underwent several significant transformations.

The most notable of these was the successful merger of Vistara with Air India, a process that was completed without any major disruptions. Additionally, the company worked on plans to expand its fleet and even surpassed market leader IndiGo on several busy routes.

In reality, Air India is currently grappling with several major challenges. Due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, airspace restrictions have been imposed, forcing aircraft to take longer routes. This has resulted in increased fuel consumption and higher operational costs. Furthermore, delays in the delivery of new aircraft and rising operational expenses continue to pose difficulties for the company.

Amidst these challenges, the crash of an Air India Boeing Dreamliner (AI 171) in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025—an incident that claimed the lives of 241 people—dealt a severe blow to the company. This tragedy has had a detrimental impact on both the company’s public image and its operations.
