Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen Dies; PM Modi Leads Tributes

Agartala: After being treated at a private hospital in Bengaluru for more than four months, Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker and four-time MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen passed away on Friday. He was 72 years old. Sen, who began his political career with the Congress and later joined the BJP, leaves behind his wife, a son, and a daughter.

The Tripura government has declared a three-day state mourning in honor of the senior leader. The national flag will fly at half-mast in the state from December 26 to 28, and no government entertainment programs will be organized during this period. The state government on Friday ordered the closure of all government offices, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and educational institutions.

According to the government, Sen will be given a state funeral on Saturday (December 27).

Several leaders, including Prime Minister Modi and Nadda, paid tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Health Minister and BJP President J.P. Nadda, and several other leaders expressed deep condolences on Sen’s demise.

PM Modi shared a photo of himself with Sen on Twitter, writing:

“Saddened by the demise of Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen, Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly. His commitment to Tripura’s progress and social work will always be remembered. Condolences to his family and well-wishers. Om Shanti.”

Nadda wrote that Sen dedicated his entire life to public service and made significant contributions to Tripura’s development.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, senior minister Ratan Lal Nath, Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury, Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Pal, and Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman, among other leaders, expressed their deep condolences.

Chief Minister Saha said Sen’s passing was an irreparable loss for the state. He explained that during his tenure as Speaker, Sen conducted the House proceedings with utmost efficiency and impartiality.

Sen had been ill for a long time.

On August 8, while boarding a train at Agartala Railway Station for his hometown Dharmanagar, Sen suffered a brain hemorrhage and was immediately rushed to the hospital. He underwent emergency surgery in Agartala and was later transferred to Bengaluru for advanced treatment on August 11.

At the initiative of CM Saha, two specialist doctors from AIIMS Delhi also reviewed his health condition in Agartala.

Sen’s son, Dr. Arijit Sen, said that the decision to continue treatment in Bengaluru was made on the advice of doctors. He thanked the government and the medical team for their support.

Popular leader who connected with the people

Sen, a four-time MLA from the Dharmanagar assembly constituency, won on a Congress ticket in 2008 and 2013 and as a BJP candidate in 2018 and 2023.

His simplicity, public relations, and commitment to development earned him respect across all parties.

Sen’s demise has left a huge void in Tripura politics. The state is mourning the loss of a public servant who dedicated his life to the people.
