CBI raids former Punjab DGP Mustafa’s house, probe into son Aqeel Akhtar’s death continues

Panchkula, November 15: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team on Saturday conducted an investigation for about eight hours at the house of former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Mustafa. The investigation is related to the suspicious death of his son Aqeel Akhtar. The CBI team reached Mustafa’s house in Panchkula around 11 am and started the investigation, staying there till 7 pm.

Detailed timeline of CBI team’s investigation

The CBI registered the case on November 6 and seized all records from the Panchkula SIT that night. On November 7, Shamsuddin Chaudhary was called for questioning and important videos and documents were handed over to the CBI.

A social media video by Aqeel Akhtar gave a boost to the investigation.

On August 27, 2022, Aqeel Akhtar posted a video on social media, alleging that his family members, including his mother and sister, were conspiring to kill him or register a false case against him. Aqeel died under suspicious circumstances in Panchkula on October 16. Based on this video, Shamsuddin Chaudhary filed an FIR against the family of former DGP Mustafa.

Former DGP Mustafa’s political and police career

Mustafa is a 1985 batch IPS officer and was a close aide of Captain Amarinder Singh during the Congress government in Punjab. However, when Captain Amarinder Singh was not appointed as the DGP of Punjab Police, Mustafa moved the Supreme Court on grounds of seniority, but the court rejected his petition. Following this, Mustafa retired in 2021.

Mustafa’s family’s political history

Mustafa’s wife, Razia Sultana, is a senior Congress party leader and has contested as an MLA from Malerkotla twice. She became a minister in the Captain Amarinder Singh-led government in 2017. In 2021, when Charanjit Channi took over as the Chief Minister, Razia was made a minister again. However, she lost to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate in the 2022 assembly elections.

CBI investigation and allegations against the family

The CBI investigation is currently ongoing, and the authorities are yet to clarify the exact reasons for Aqeel’s death. During the investigation, the CBI has also questioned other members of Mustafa’s family and related persons.
