Chamoli: Women of Sakot take historic decision, liquor banned in public events

The Mahila Mangal Dal of the Sakot Gram Panchayat of the Dasoli development block has completely banned the consumption and serving of alcohol at public functions in the village. At a meeting, the women passed a resolution stating that any family serving alcohol at any public function will be fined ₹50,000. The women also organized an awareness rally in the village.

A Gram Panchayat meeting was held in the courtyard of the Panchayat house, chaired by Mahila Mangal Dal President Sateshwari Devi. The women expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of alcohol in the area. A resolution was passed stating that there will be a complete ban on alcohol within the Gram Panchayat.

A fine of ₹50,000 will be imposed for disturbing the village atmosphere by drinking alcohol, or for consuming or serving alcohol at public functions. It was announced that awareness rallies against alcohol will be organized periodically in the village. Social activist Chandi Thapliyal stated that this decision by the women is in the best interest of the Gram Panchayat. After the meeting, the women organized an awareness rally from Tentuna, Sakot, to Amkhet Maldhar.
