Two-Storey Building Collapses in Chandigarh, Two Dead, Five Rescued; Renovation Work Suspected Behind Mishap

Chandigarh: Two people were killed and five others were rescued after a two-storey building collapsed in Chandigarh’s Industrial Area Phase II, triggering a massive rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Chandigarh Police, the fire department and local authorities. Rescue operations concluded after authorities confirmed no one else was trapped beneath the debris.

The deceased were identified as Tarun Jain and Tarun Kaushik, relatives from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The injured were rescued and shifted to hospital for treatment.

Rescue Operation Lasted Several Hours

The building collapsed on Saturday evening, prompting emergency teams to rush to the site. NDRF personnel, firefighters and police used heavy machinery to remove the debris and rescue those trapped.

Authorities said the search operation was called off after all occupants were accounted for and the site was declared clear.

Renovation Work Suspected as Possible Cause

According to officials, renovation work was underway in the building at the time of the collapse. Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi said around six to seven people were inside the structure when it gave way. Preliminary information suggests the building, reportedly being used as a scrap godown, may have collapsed during the renovation work, though the exact cause is yet to be established.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether structural weakness, renovation activity or any safety violations led to the collapse.
