Chandigarh: Punjab Police have intensified their investigation into the February 16 firing incident at The Willow Café in Sector-10, summoning Angad Umranangal, son of Punjab Inspector General of Police (IG) K.S. Umranangal, for questioning.
Angad appeared before officials at Police Station Sector-3 on Monday, where he was interrogated in connection with the incident. Police sources confirmed that he was allowed to leave after questioning, as he is currently protected by anticipatory bail granted by the High Court.
Firing Incident at Sector-10 Cafe
The case dates back to the evening of February 16, 2025, when six youths reportedly visited The Willow Café. During their visit, one of them allegedly brandished a pistol and fired a shot inside the premises. Startled by the gunfire, the café staff reviewed CCTV footage, which clearly captured the firing.
A case was initially registered at Sector-3 Police Station against unidentified persons, based on a complaint filed by the café’s head chef, Balbir Ram.
Other Individuals, Guard Under Scanner
According to police, Angad was accompanied by other individuals whose identities have now been verified through CCTV footage. All of them are expected to be summoned for questioning in the coming days. The presence of a security guard in khaki uniform alongside the group has raised further suspicion. Authorities are currently examining the guard’s role in the incident.
After the FIR was lodged, Angad swiftly moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking anticipatory bail, which was granted, allowing him to avoid immediate arrest. However, police maintain that the investigation is progressing and further questioning of all individuals involved is imminent.
The case has drawn public attention due to the involvement of a senior police officer’s family member. Chandigarh Police have assured that the probe will proceed strictly in accordance with the law, irrespective of any affiliations.
