Chandigarh: The farmers’ sit-in protest, which had been ongoing for the past seven days at the Chandigarh-Mohali border, ended on Monday. Farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal announced the end of the agitation after reaching an agreement with the Punjab government on several demands.
Rajewal stated that the government had accepted several key demands of the farmers, prompting the decision to call off the protest.
Special Assembly Session on Punjab’s Water Issue
Rajewal informed that agreements related to Punjab’s water would be reviewed. A special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly will be convened to discuss this issue.
He stated that the farmers’ next struggle would be against the central government. Rajewal alleged that injustice regarding Punjab’s water has been ongoing since 1966.
He declared, “We will not allow Punjab’s water to be looted any longer.” He also clarified that the farmers’ fight would now move to the level of the central government.
Proposal for One-Time Settlement of Farmers’ Loans
Addressing the issue of farmers’ loans, Rajewal said that a proposal for a One-Time Settlement (OTS)would be introduced in the Assembly. Under this, a proposal would be tabled to waive interest on farmers’ loans and provide some relief on the principal amount.
He added that the subsequent procedures regarding this would be completed at the Assembly level.
Proposals on Electricity and Seed Bills Also Forthcoming
According to Rajewal, resolutions regarding the Electricity Amendment Bill and the Seed Bill will also be passed in the Punjab Legislative Assembly.
He further stated that the Punjab government would ensure sugarcane farmers receive the highest sugarcane prices in the country. Additionally, sugar mills would not be permitted to withhold payments to farmers for extended periods. Rajewal says: 100% of the movement’s demands accepted
Announcing the end of the sit-in, Rajewal termed it a major victory for the farmers. He stated that this was the first time in his life that 100 percent of the demands of a movement had been accepted.
Farmers had been staging a sit-in at the Chandigarh-Mohali border for the past seven days to press for their various demands.
