Chandigarh: Chandigarh Police seized 1 kilogram 214 grams of gold and ₹1.42 crore in cash from a car during a routine blockade near the Colony No. 4 light point. The operation was carried out by the Industrial Area police station team while conducting a regular vehicle check.

The car, a black Honda Amaze, was stopped on Sunday for inspection.

    Driver Failed to Produce Documents

According to police, when the driver was asked to produce documents related to the gold and cash, he failed to provide any valid explanation or paperwork on the spot. This raised suspicion, prompting a detailed search of the vehicle

    Inspector Satnam Singh’s Statement

Inspector Satnam Singh of the Industrial Area police station said that during the search, police recovered a large quantity of gold bars and cash.

“The recovered gold was marked 9999 fine gold, including 100-gram, 50-gram, and 1-ounce gold bars, along with cash amounting to ₹1 crore 42 lakh,” the inspector said.

    Jeweller Identified as Ambala Resident

He told police that he had come to Chandigarh to supply jewellery to clients in Sectors 22 and 8, among other areas, and was returning after delivering the goods when he was stopped at the checkpoint

    Income Tax Department Informed

Given the seriousness of the recovery, Chandigarh Police immediately informed the Income Tax Department. Officials are now investigating the source of the gold and cash and the purpose of its transportation.

Police are also examining whether the seizure is connected to hawala transactions, tax evasion, or any other illegal financial activities.

    Investigation Ongoing
