Terror Plot Foiled in Chandigarh: 3 Held With IED, Firearm, 5 Kg Gelatin Sticks in Tiffin Box Near Bus Stand

Chandigarh: Police have foiled a suspected terror plot in Chandigarh and arrested three people who are believed to have links with Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), a Khalistani separatist terrorist organisation, officials said.

The three men were apprehended near the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Sector 43, Chandigarh, after police recovered a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED), explosive materials and a firearm from them.

According to police, the explosive material was concealed inside a tiffin box bag. The recoveries included around 5 kg of gelatin stick explosives, a detonator, a power source and a remotely operated system, besides a pistol, a magazine and five live cartridges.

The arrested men have been identified as Lovepreet Singh, 19, from Sarhali village in Tarn Taran; Jashanpreet Singh, 21, from Deobath village in Tarn Taran; and Prabhpreet Singh alias Prabh, 19, from Tarsikka village in Amritsar.

Accused Allegedly Linked to Foreign-Based BKI Handler

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had allegedly come in contact with Satnam alias Satta Naushera, a suspected foreign-based handler associated with BKI.

Police said the three were allegedly acting on his directions and had planned to plant an IED in Chandigarh with the intention of creating terror.

Investigators are questioning the accused to establish how the explosives were procured, where they were being taken and whether other people were involved in the alleged plot.

FIR Registered, Probe Underway

Following the recovery, an FIR was registered at Sector 36 police station under relevant provisions of the Explosives Act and Arms Act.

Chandigarh Police said security measures have been strengthened around important locations and key transit points. The police have also urged people not to panic and to report any suspicious activity.

Further investigation is underway to establish the wider network, the source of the explosive material and the role of other associates.

This is the second suspected BKI module to be busted in Chandigarh in around a month. On July 26, police had arrested a person and recovered an IED containing around 1.3 kg of high explosive, along with shrapnel and ball bearings.

The arrested accused in that case was identified as Satbir Singh, a resident of Padiana village in Adampur, Jalandhar. An FIR was registered against him under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Explosive Substances Act and Arms Act.
